Advantage SA speakers to inspire students in Roxby Downs

26 May 2011

Advantage SA’s award-winning Speakers in Schools program, which educates and inspires the State’s future leaders about the myriad of career opportunities available in South Australia, is visiting Roxby Downs today and tomorrow.

Three speakers will present to students at schools in Roxby Downs and surrounding areas including Roxby Downs Area School and St Barbara’s Parish School to inspire students with their career success stories.

Advantage SA CEO Karen Raffen said that the Speakers in Schools program is essential in retaining young talent in South Australia.

“The Speakers in Schools program plays a vital role in exposing students to the diversity of industries and rewarding career paths available in South Australia,” Ms Raffen said.

“The Roxby Downs tour is one of four regional tours that the Speakers in Schools program conducts each year to provide young people across the State with the opportunity to hear from South Australian professionals about the many opportunities that the State offers.”

Lisa Bailey, Senior Programs Coordinator, RiAus (The Royal Institution of Australia) has had a fascinating career, including making a world-record sized whoopee cushion to demonstrate concepts in sound. Dedicated to bringing science to people and people to science, Lisa has some amazing stories for the students in Roxby Downs.

Barry Mitchell and Tim Lange, both from BHP Billiton, will be telling students of their extensive experience in the mining industry. Barry Mitchell, General Manager of Mining at Olympic Dam has had an incredible 30 years in hard rock mining. Tim Lange will share his experiences as a Health, Safety and Environment Superintendent.

Advantage SA’s Program & Event Coordinator Nadia Radice will accompany the speakers on the tour visiting Roxby Downs on Thursday 26 May and Friday 27 May 2011.

The program was recognised late last year by the Technology Industry Association, receiving the Support of Education Award at their 2010 annual awards dinner.

Advantage SA’s award winning Speakers in Schools program is proudly supported by the Government of South Australia, BHP Billiton, Credit Union SA and UniSA.
