Limestone Coast

Sony Centre Arts Award

Winner – Limestone Coast Art Prize

The Limestone Coast Art Prize (LCAP) is an annual event organised and run by the arts presenter group Promoters of Entertainment and Arts in Keith (PEAK). The prize grew from somewhat humble beginnings when in 2004 a local businessman approached PEAK with the idea of sponsoring an art prize. From here PEAK developed the theme around creating awareness of mental health issues in rural Australia and to attempt to change community attitudes to the problems of depression, bipolar disorder and suicide. Their themes in the past seven years have been varied and included ‘Wouldn't be dead for quids’ (2004), ‘Out of the Blue’ (2005), ‘Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll’ (2006), ‘That's Life, Shit Happens’ (2007), ‘Sports Mad’ (2008) and ‘Always on my mind’ (2010).

The entry requirements of the prize itself are quite unique in that all mediums are accepted: entries have included sculptures, digital art, paintings, drawings and collage. All age groups are encouraged to enter, and a youth specific category and prize have recently been developed to encourage younger entrants.

The inaugural sponsor of the LCAP was local businessman Richard Stanbury, who was the original collaborator in developing the annual concept of the art prize. More recently the art prize has been sponsored jointly by local identity James Darling and the innovative committee Keith War Memorial Community Committee as well at the Tatiara District Council, which incorporated a new youth category in 2011.

Joint open winners of the Limestone Coast Art Prize 2011 were Adelaide artist Kim Buck with her work ‘Event Horizon’ and Josh Fartch of Melbourne with his entry ‘Roma Little’. Youth Art Prize winner was Talya Davies of Millicent with her work ‘Jack and Jack’. Adelaide gallery owner Hugo Michell judged the Art Prize in 2011.

Westpac Small Business Award

Winner – Coastal Treasures

Coastal Treasures is a beading and craft supply store, complimented with an extensive ladies fashion accessory range and handmade jewellery. The retail shop is based in the small coastal town of Beachport and also offers an online website for distribution of beading and craft supplies and unique handmade jewellery. The business opened two years ago after the beads and jewellery side of store At The Jetty grew too extensive for the space available, thus creating the need to move this section of the business to new premises. In November 2009, Coastal Treasures opened the doors and has, and will continue to trade seven days a week.

The business is owned and operated by 21 year old local Beachport resident Elise Reilly and employs two permanent part time employees and additional casual staff over the peak tourist season. As an employee of At The Jetty for six years, Elise was  instrumental in growing the beading and jewellery section of the business which then progressed to her opening her own store. This saw the beginning of Coastal Treasures. Research is undertaken to continually expand the knowledge base and keep up with latest trends through overseas and interstate contacts, which enables the business to provide a unique shopping experience.
